Bean Interview: Sheridan Acres Heirloom Beans

Farmers play such a critical role in Bean World, and yet many of us do not often (or ever?) get a chance to talk to them. That is one reason I was so excited to chat with Kevin Messing of Sheridan Acres for the next episode in my bean interview series, Behind the Scenes the World of Beans! At Sheridan Acres, they grow heirloom beans in the heart of Michigan bean country. (Fun fact: Michigan ranks second for bean production in the United States, after North Dakota.)

In this interview, Kevin generously shares his knowledge about growing many types of beans on their family farm, including black beans, flor de mayo beans, flor de junio beans, buckskin beans, calypso beans, and so many others. He also explains what his journey has been like, setting up a system to grow a wide variety of heirloom beans that he then cleans, bags, and sends directly to chefs and other customers. And yes, of course we get details on some of his favorite types of beans and bean dishes!
